Beginning Irish Dance

This exciting class will introduce students to the rich cultural heritage of Ireland through dancing to traditional music. Students will learn the fundamentals of Irish dance- timing, body position and footwork, as they learn the beginner reel and light jig.

This week we went over the reel and the light jig. We learned some stretches and how to duck walk. You should practice duck walks every week to improve your turnout, which is necessary for proper Irish dancing. We also learned the first step of Slip Jig. Here are the steps so that you can practice at home:

R= right foot   L=Left foot

1st STEP (done in a circle):

R step, L hop hop

L step, R hop hop

R over 2, 3. 4, 5 

L over 2, 3, 4, 5

R step, L hop hop

2ND STEP: PAUSE STEP, to the right 3 times then R knee, R over 2, 3

                    To the left 3 times then L knee, L over 2,3

3RD STEP: Step step heel step step step to the right , then R knee, R over 2, 3

                    To the left, L knee, L over 2, 3

                    To the right, then R knee, R over 2, 3

                    To the left, L knee, L over 2, 3

4TH STEP: (Take your time)

                   R Point heel Point, R knee, R over 2, 3

                   L Point heel Point, L knee, L over 2, 3
