Explore history in a hands-on way as you learn to paint the way monks guildsmen did during the Middle ages. Students will learn all about how color was used and looked at from the Medieval World view.

FOR WEEK 6:

Transfer the Lady and Knight to watercolor paper. Paint the hands, faces and horses saddle a flesh color. Paint the tree, bird's feet, horse's stirrup and decoration, and the underside of the knight's tunic with red orange (primary red cinnabar). See slides for details.

Transfer the design of the Douce-Pliny A onto watercolor paper. Paint the blue flowers/jewels with 2 coats of paint. Highlight them with white. Paint the vines and some of the jewels pistachio (light) green. We will paint the highlights/shadows on these in class next week. Paint the background red. See slides for details.

Finish painting the Douce-Pliny Letter A as best you can. See slides for reference. DUE when classes resume in JANUARY. We will begin to paint in egg tempera instead of glair. Have a great holiday break, and Merry Christmas!

Paint at least 3 more layers of background, using blue and white. Paint lightest to darkest. See slides for details.

Mix yellow with a bit of white, divide into 3 shades and paint at least 3-6 layers of underpainting. 
Glaze with red at least 3-4 layers or until the desired shade is achieved. 
You will probably have to use umber (brown) to add shadows back in. See slides for more details. Don't forget to study for the Metallic Blue Quiz next week!

Using a quilting pin, prick the outline of Fra Filippo Lippi's "Virgin". Just do the figure; don't worry about the background. If you haven't already, next week we will transfer the drawing to our panel with charcoal. If you have already transferred your drawing, then outline it with colored pencil so that next week we can begin the India ink wash.

Using the slides as a reference, put the "apples in the cheeks" of your painting. Remember, this is any place where skin touches cartelidge on the body- ears, nose, cheekbones, chin, wrist bone, finger joints...Use your just your red pigment and do 3 very sheer layers. Next week we will begin to work on her skin tone.

Paint the skin tones on your figure. Don't forget to add shadows as necessary, and the scumble a very thin layer of white to smooth out her skin. Paint her sleeves and the thin strip of bodice in white mixed with red (any red) for 3 layers, then do 2-3 layers of just red. DUE MARCH 14.

Paint the pearls, her hair, and the gold trim on her dress. See slides for instructions. DUE March 20

Finish painting the veil and the blue dress. Don't forget her eyes! Touch up any other parts of the painting that you would like to. DUE MARCH 28.

Find a picture you would like to paint for your final project. It can be a floral, still life (these are easiest), figure or animal. Print out a copy 8"x8" (or crop it). If you DON'T want to use the hole-poking method to transfer it, print it in reverse.

Finish transferring your design of choice onto your panel. For pin-pricking: Trace over your lines with a colored pencil in dark orange, red, red brown, pink or brown. Gently wipe away the excess charcoal. For pencil transfer: Go over your lines with a colored pencil only if they are very light. We will do the India ink wash next week.

Finish your black and white underpainting in India ink. Think about what color you want to paint your background. Begin painting in 2-3 layers of background color. 

DUE APRIL 10.

 

April 10, 2018

Complete steps 4-5 of your painting. This is your underpainting, adding "apples to the cheeks" if you have a portrait, beginning some layers of your background, and adding back in any shadows you lost if your layers were too thick. At this point your painting should look pale and be in odd colors that are NOT the same as the final result.

April 17, 2018

Begin to add the actual colors to your painting. Decide on your main color, and make 5 variations of it (lighter, darker, medium, warmer and cooler). Paint your objects in. Don't worry if you don't finish- we will continue working on it the last day of class (next week).
