Your glass apothecary jars were going quite well. Don't forget-your homework was to put something inside and turn it in to me! I really liked the white charcoal on black paper drawings. You did well on the grid drawings-finish them, please.
You may turn in your 5-6 selections for the Art Show any time.
The Art Show will be in the evening on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, May 9 ,11 and 12 at Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene. The church is at 500 West Calle Concordia.
Please vote for art classes you hope to take next year!

Since I updated here, we spent some time on one and two point perspective, facial proportions and expressions. You did very well drawing the distortion of the pencils in water. We'll be working on our colored pencil drawings for two more weeks. I will add watercolor pencils you may use on the background. We still have plenty more techniques to cover in the coming weeks. Be prepared to provide 5 or 6 completed pieces for the Art Show. Choose your best work, your favorites. Anything from class or outside of class is fine. I will provide black paper for mounting or you may purchase mats for your art.

We have finished up our facial proportions unit. The standards I showed you are guidelines as every face you draw will be a bit different. The more you practice-the better your drawings will be.
We'll spend another week, maybe two, on perspective drawing. Add details and shading to your drawings and erase the guidelines. Learning the basics and using a ruler will help you "see" the depth as you sketch and draw.

Happy New Year!  I hope you enjoyed your time off. Now we're back to work! You did a great job drawing the cow skull. I noticed everyone is developing their own drawing style. I love seeing your creativity! This week and next we'll work on facial proportion. Knowing ideal proportions helps when drawing a live model. This semester we'll learn different types of perspective, drawing and shading soft edges and grid drawing.  We'll also learn color pencil techniques and white on black drawing. Please finish drawings that will be displayed in the Art Show in May. We will discuss how best to display them and work on that toward the end of April. You are amazing!! Keep up the great work!!

Happy October! Some have asked about what kind of pencils to purchase. There are so many options out there. As with anything else, prices and quality vary quite a bit. At the very least, get a set that has 3-4 B(soft) pencils. You will probably want one HB as well. HB is a hard pencil good for lightly sketching and planning your drawing. Some sets will have a wide range of both B and HB and a kneaded and/or plastic eraser. Plan a budget and buy the best set you can afford. We will be using charcoal and water soluble charcoal pencils next week. You may want to have some of those in your kit, too.
Brands vary a lot, too. General and Kimberly are decent economy brands. Prismacolor is a little better quality. We use all of these in class. Walmart carries General, Michaels carries all three plus Derwent and more. (Get a 40% off coupon for Michaels and stretch your budget into a larger set)
You may continue to use my pencils in class. Having your own supplies allows you to draw MORE and that is how you will improve the most!
See you next week!

Teen/Adult Drawing. Sept. 24, 2016
